WOMEN OF THE WORLD
Multicultural Women’s Community Development Project
The multicultural women’s support group project is a locally funded project of the United Way of London and Middlesex. It is sponsored by the London InterCommunity Health Centre.
The purpose of the support group is to enable women to promote their own health and the health of other women through mutual support. The groups help women who are new to Canada to recognize their own skills, develop friendships and to become informed about services and people who may help them to adjust to life in Canada.
The women’s support group project has three components:
- Personal development training
- Volunteer facilitator training
- Community support groups

Community Support Groups
Volunteers from the WOMEN OF THE WORLD training group hold meetings with women from their ethnic communities in their own language. Each group chooses their topics for discussion, for example:assertiveness, family law, communication skills, social services in London, wife abuse, first aid and stress. These groups are ongoing and new people are welcome at any time. We are presently offering support groups in the following cultural groups: Afghani, Bosnian, Eritrean, Filipino, Latin American, Sudanese and Arab.
W.O.W. Facilitator's Training Group
Immigrant women from a variety of cultural backgrounds meet for mutual support and training. The women learn to facilitate by practicing in the group. English is the language spoken. The women have named this group WOMEN OF THE WORLD.
Resource Development
Women from London’s ethnocultural communities work with the health centre staff to develop information that will be helpful to their communities. This information, translated by the women, is available in a number of languages.
